Brees Embraces Lead Role for Players – NFL

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints quarterback, to endorse a forthcoming charity golf tournament, appeared in San Diego. The most appealing part of the promotion was Brees, who had to face too many questions, although not many questions were about golf. The questions were about the lawsuit that was recently filed to block the league’s lockout.

On March 11, the league and players were unsuccessful to create a new collective bargaining agreement. The antitrust suit and injunction demand in federal court was filed on that same day by Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and six other current NFL players, and the NFL owners locked out the players, putting the 2011 season in trouble.

Brees said at a news conference that the fight was brought to them and it was the correct thing to put his name on an antitrust lawsuit against the league. He added that he appreciates the sacrifices that players had made before him and it is his conscientiousness to represent veteran players, retired players, former players and not just current players but for the future players and the future of this league.

From 2001 until 2005, Brees played with the San Diego Chargers. He was then permitted to leave as a free agent. In February 2010, he led the Saints to a Super Bowl victory. The performance of Brees was quite remarkable in the 2010 Super Bowl victory. The Saints were in top-notch form in 2010.

For a scheduled hearing on the players’ demand for a preliminary injunction to block the lockout, Brees does not plan to be in court on April 6.

NFL Preview: Tennessee Titans at San Diego Chargers

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

The Tennessee Titans will head to San Diego to take on the Chargers this weekend. The Chargers will be the 3.5 point favorites in the game. The total for the game sits at 44.

The Titans are an excellent road team, winning all three of their road games this season. This will be a big deal for them as they square off against the Chargers. They are 5-2 to this point in the season and they seem to find a way to pull out victories on a weekly basis. They have won three games in a row and win could send them into their bye week with a lot of momentum.

The Chargers seem to fall further and further as time goes. The problem does not seem to lie in the overall performance of their offense or defense however. The Chargers have the best passing yard total and the lowest amount of passing yards allowed in the league. Only three teams in the league have a better rushing defense. Their rushing game isn’t one of the top ones in the league, but it is still solid. The problem with the Chargers appears to be in their ability to win close games.

In all 5 of their losses they have not lost by more than 8 points. This means that in every game they had a chance to win. Unfortunately, they have not pulled out a close game to this point in the season. They two victories came by margins of 25 points or greater.

The Chargers will need to jump out to a lead if they hope to win as its clear that they struggle in the close games. Unfortunately, the Titans are a team that manages to find a way to put up points on the board consistently. The Titans have scored at least 29 points in all of their wins.

NFL Season Preview: San Diego Chargers

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

The San Diego Chargers had one of the quieter 13 win seasons that the league has ever seen. In the midst of talk surrounding the Vikings, Saints, Colts and Patriots, the San Diego Chargers managed to win 13 games without anyone really paying attention.

The Chargers have had an offseason of drama after the departure of their hall of fame running back. The Chargers have answered the departure of their running back by picking up a running back with the 12th pick in the NFL draft this season. Ryan Mathews will be expected to step right in and carry the load for the Chargers.

One benefit for the Chargers this season will be their receiving core. Vincent Jackson enjoyed the best start of any receiver in the NFL last season and will be expected to be a number one option for Philip Rivers this season. Last year Jackson roped in 68 balls. He will probably be expected to catch more balls this year and will need to step up to the challenge. The Chargers also have the ever consistent Antonio Gates to look to. He will be expected to put up yet another stellar season.

Last year the Chargers scored 454 points. This was the highest total in the AFC. The Chargers will need to continue to score points, but they can’t only rely on putting up gobs of points to win games. The defense will need to continue to be solid. They had the best defense in the AFC West, but they could continue to improve. Their opponents average 20 points a game against them last season and that may not get it done against the top teams in the league.

San Diego Chargers: Up for Few Revelations

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

After nine productive years with the team, future-hall-of-fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson was released by the San Diego Chargers. NT Jamal Williams and CB Antonio Cromartie also left the team.  The Chargers have yet to replace any of these players and will use the Draft to do so.

Expect them to use their first round selection (28th overall) on a running back as this draft is loaded with talented running backs. They will look to add depth at NT and CB, following the departure of key players in these positions.

the Chargers will likely select Ryan Matthews out of Fresno State with the 28th overall pick. The bruising running style of Matthews will be a nice compliment to speedy scatback Darren Sproles in the Chargers.

Thanks to a trade with Seattle (40th overall), the Chargers have an early second round selection. They will likely look for a NT to replace Williams there.  As some project Alabama’s Terrence Cody to be a first rounder, he would be a steal if he is still around.  If Cody is off the board, they will Cam Thomas (North Carolina) or Tyson Alualu (California).

In the third round (91st overall) comes San Diego’s next pick. Behind projected starters Quentin Jammer and Antoine Carson, they lack depth at cornerback.  Expect them to add another cornerback, such as South Florida’s Jerome Murphy or Fresno State’s A.J. Jefferson when they make their third round selection.
