New York Giants – NFL Season – Preview

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

For the NFC coming into 2010, the New York Giants are the wildcard. Giants came out blazing, last year. They were also very popular in football betting odds. They looked as though they were well on their way towards a playoff run and they won their first 5 games. Unfortunately, for the Giants, their fortunes changed and they ran into the Saints.

The Giants were never able to rebound and they went on to lose 4 games in a row. On the season, the team finished with a poor record of 8-8. While scoring less than 10 points, their last two games were blowouts in which they surrendered 40 points or more.

Eli Manning will be one of the big factors in the success of the team. Last season when Manning made a lot of turnovers, the Giants’ losses came often. Manning actually put together a great season in 2009 and he has all of the tools. This year however, Manning will need to limit his turnovers, or the Giants may not be able to step to the next level.

Obviously, coming into 2010 the defense will be a question as well. During the season, there are a few questions surrounding the resilience of the Giants, after giving up 40 or more points 5 times. It seemed that when the opponents started rolling the Giants had no method to stop them, although the Giants did show stretches of good play on defense. As a play of a championship caliber team, it doesn’t sound like the same.

In 2010, the Giants will decide their own fate. They will be a contender, if they can buckle down and play tough.

NFL Season Preview: San Diego Chargers

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

The San Diego Chargers had one of the quieter 13 win seasons that the league has ever seen. In the midst of talk surrounding the Vikings, Saints, Colts and Patriots, the San Diego Chargers managed to win 13 games without anyone really paying attention.

The Chargers have had an offseason of drama after the departure of their hall of fame running back. The Chargers have answered the departure of their running back by picking up a running back with the 12th pick in the NFL draft this season. Ryan Mathews will be expected to step right in and carry the load for the Chargers.

One benefit for the Chargers this season will be their receiving core. Vincent Jackson enjoyed the best start of any receiver in the NFL last season and will be expected to be a number one option for Philip Rivers this season. Last year Jackson roped in 68 balls. He will probably be expected to catch more balls this year and will need to step up to the challenge. The Chargers also have the ever consistent Antonio Gates to look to. He will be expected to put up yet another stellar season.

Last year the Chargers scored 454 points. This was the highest total in the AFC. The Chargers will need to continue to score points, but they can’t only rely on putting up gobs of points to win games. The defense will need to continue to be solid. They had the best defense in the AFC West, but they could continue to improve. Their opponents average 20 points a game against them last season and that may not get it done against the top teams in the league.
