2010 NCAA College Football Preview: Virginia Tech Hokies

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

After 63 wins, 3 ACC titles, and 2 bowl wins in the last six years, fans of the Virginia Tech Hokies football team are ready to see them move up to the next level. Namely, they want to see them compete for the National Championship. Football matchup reviews expects Hokies to perform their best this season.

Since Virginia Tech joined the ACC in 2004, they have become the conference’s best team and have outplayed historical powerhouses Miami (FL) and Florida State. They are one of the favorites to win the ACC yet again, but in order to do so they need to fill in the various holes left in the unit following the departure of seven starters. Defense has been a strong suit for Tech, with last season’s defensive squad gave up an average of just 15 points per game.

Tech’s offense will be led by senior quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Taylor led the ACC in pass efficiency last season with a 149.39 ranking and is the ACC’s active leader in total offense.

The Hokies’ running game should be as good as it has ever been, with running backs coach calling this year’s running back group as the best he’s ever coached in his 32 years as a coach at Virginia Tech. Sophomore Ryan Williams will be one to watch after putting up monster numbers (ACC leading totals of 1,655 yards and 22 touchdowns, and a 5.6-yards-per-carry average) in his freshmen season.

Virginia Tech opens up its season with a matchup against Boise State on Labor Day. They will be trying to hand the Broncos their first loss since December 23, 2008, and their first regular season loss since November 23, 2007. Other key matchups include a home game with Georgia Tech (Nov. 4) and a road game with Miami (November 20).

NFL trade benefits Marshall

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

on April 14th for two second-round picks, one this year and one next year, Brandon Marshall was traded from the Denver Broncos to the Miami Dolphins, which is great for a team in serious need of rebuilding. The Broncos had no desire to sign Marshall to a long-term deal after the 2009-10 season as Marshall seems to have benefited from the trade.

They needed a big play receiver, Finishing 31st in the NFL in passing plays over 20 yards. At 6’4″ 230 pounds he will be a hard one to tackle once he’s on the move, they will be getting a big, strong, and physically able receiver who can get the job done, With Marshall in the roster. Last season, Marshall caught 101 passes for 1,120 yards and 10 TDs. That’s three seasons with at least a hundred catches.

So where does this leave the Broncos? A distraction will be for one, they will be rid of what they would consider. The organization’s decisions left them no choice but to trade him as they did not take the risk of giving him a long-term deal and with the inability for Marshall and Coach McDaniels to coexist.

As wide receiver, who do the Broncos have left? A 12-year veteran, Brandon Stokley, who caught 19 passes for 327 yards and 4 TDs. I see his numbers increasing in the next season. Jabar Gaffney and Brandon Lloyd, the two young receivers who have yet to catch a pass to date and should also see increased playing time.
