2010 NCAA College Football Preview: Virginia Tech Hokies

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

After 63 wins, 3 ACC titles, and 2 bowl wins in the last six years, fans of the Virginia Tech Hokies football team are ready to see them move up to the next level. Namely, they want to see them compete for the National Championship. Football matchup reviews expects Hokies to perform their best this season.

Since Virginia Tech joined the ACC in 2004, they have become the conference’s best team and have outplayed historical powerhouses Miami (FL) and Florida State. They are one of the favorites to win the ACC yet again, but in order to do so they need to fill in the various holes left in the unit following the departure of seven starters. Defense has been a strong suit for Tech, with last season’s defensive squad gave up an average of just 15 points per game.

Tech’s offense will be led by senior quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Taylor led the ACC in pass efficiency last season with a 149.39 ranking and is the ACC’s active leader in total offense.

The Hokies’ running game should be as good as it has ever been, with running backs coach calling this year’s running back group as the best he’s ever coached in his 32 years as a coach at Virginia Tech. Sophomore Ryan Williams will be one to watch after putting up monster numbers (ACC leading totals of 1,655 yards and 22 touchdowns, and a 5.6-yards-per-carry average) in his freshmen season.

Virginia Tech opens up its season with a matchup against Boise State on Labor Day. They will be trying to hand the Broncos their first loss since December 23, 2008, and their first regular season loss since November 23, 2007. Other key matchups include a home game with Georgia Tech (Nov. 4) and a road game with Miami (November 20).
