Lobendahn Set to Join Calgary Stampeders

Thursday, May 10th, 2012

Intriguing Calgary Stampeders have an impending signing of veteran middle linebacker Joe Lobendahn and this piece of news have made training-camp battle just got a little more interesting. After spending four seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the 29-year-old University of Washington product was released last week.

Lobendahn had a history of knee problems with the Bombers, which included torn ligament last September. He was forced to miss most of the season and he would join a battle for the starting job at middle linebacker with veterans Juwan Simpson and Robert McCune. Cut by the Bombers last week after spending the last seven months rehabbing a torn ACL, the Stampeders are in contract talks with Lobendahn.

Prompting concern about his ability to bounce back, the torn ligament is the third Lobendahn has rehabbed on the same knee. However, a CFL source said that it was only a matter of he and the Stamps reaching a contractual agreement and he passed his physical with the Stampeders. At least one former teammate says the 29-year-old will be an impact player again in 2012.

Lobendahn had 180 tackles and 20 special-teams tackles in 45 games with the Bombers. The five-foot-11, 242-pounder never managed to dress for all 18 games in a single season, although he also posted seven sacks and an interception. Because of his injury history, the Bombers released him partly. They started a non-import at middle linebacker with Pierre-Luc Labbe and Henoc Muamba. They did this to replace the retired Doug Brown on the defensive line.

Lobendahn told the Winnipeg Free Press upon being released that he is not happy, although it is part of the business. He added that he wanted to retire here and he hopes somebody gives him a chance. He further added that he has been hurt, however, he is confident of himself and he wants to continue with the game.

The Bombers said that Lobendahn was released because they planned that in this season, they will start a Canadian at middle linebacker. However, with other factors involved, the most likely key factor was how his health could influence the team’s budget. Lobendahn would continue to earn his salary as a CFL veteran, even if he were to go down in training camp.

NFC East Showdown: Redskins Target Cowboys Romo

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

Tony Romo, quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, has been called soft as well as a choker. He gained some fans last week when he led the Cowboys to victory as he dealt with a punctured lung. Now the Washington Redskins are looking to get in Romo’s head as the teams prepare to meet for their Monday Night Football clash.

Redskins defensive back, DeAngelo Hall, has already told the media he target Romo and focus on his mid-section when tackling the quarterback. “I want to get a chance to put my helmet on whatever’s hurt,” Hall said. “If it’s Romo’s ribs? I’m going to be asking for some corner blitzes.”

If Hall does knock Romo out of the game it will be the first time the light corner ever knocked a player out of a game. ESPN’s Mark Schlereth, took exception to someone like Hall stepping up and speaking about knocking Romo out of the game.

“That’s the first time you’re ever going to hit anybody,” he ranted sarcastically. “Good for you. That’s great. That’s awesome.

The Cowboys come into this game with a high-powered offense and a defense that is still trying to find themselves. Another key to this game is that the Cowboys have never won a home in Cowboys Stadium. A fact that has not escaped Jerry Jones, the Cowboys outspoken owner.

The Redskins have looked improved over last year but they are definitely a work in progress. Mike Shanahan is turning the team into a bump and grind offense and an aggressive defense but the team is still a work in progress.

Seems to me that there might be some pretty good NFL betting props for this match up.

AFC North Preview for 2011 NFL

Monday, August 8th, 2011

The AFC North has been well known as the most physically demanding divisions in the National Football League. Sportsbooks have been making money off their games for years. It’s the rivalry involved – no matter who’s playing whom in the AFC North, it’s a big time rivalry game.

Let’s be honest, the division had been dominated of late by two of the NFL’s best teams – the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Pittsburgh has won the Super Bowl 6 times and played for 7 last year. They lost to Green Bay, but the Steelers have had a lot of success. Pittsburgh was 12-4 last year, 10-6 ATS. The team is getting older, no doubt, but it’s hard to argue against their chances at yet another playoff birth.

The Baltimore Ravens were also 12-4 overall, a little worse than Pittsburgh against the spread, 8-7-1. Baltimore doesn’t have age on their side, either – but offensively they have some young guys maturing at the right time and a good group of veterans like Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Terrell Suggs leading their defense.

The Bengals haven’t impressed much over their existence, and last year was no different. They lost many close games, and just being part of the franchise has driven Carson Palmer to an early retirement. The Bengals were 4-12 last season, but 7-9 ATS, giving sports betting types hope. They have gotten much younger and improving on those numbers looks like quite the task.

Finally the Browns. They’re in a better spot than Cincinnati, or so it seems. They have young pieces that had time to grown last season. That’s why they were 5-11 straight up and against the spread. They should be a couple games better this year, and possibly hop over .500 ATS.

NFL – New Collective Bargaining Conformity on Thursday

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

One month and two days after the NFL and its players cut off conciliations; the two sides will come again to the table for court-ordered mediation Thursday on new collective bargaining conformity.

Before the first talks flanked by the league and the players since the middle of March, NFL executives met with U.S. Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan on Wednesday for five hours the day. For about four hours Tuesday, lawyers for the players met with Boylan.

When conciliation begins in Boylan’s chambers in Minneapolis, larger contingents are anticipated, including NFL Players Association executive DeMaurice Smith and Commissioner Roger Goodell.

For first-round draft picks, the NFL wants to cut almost 60 percent of promised pay, lock them in for five years and deflect the savings to veterans’ salaries and profits.

In the guaranteed payments in 2010, more than $525 million went to first-rounders. According to documents acquired by The Associated Press, the league seeks to lessen that figure by $300 million.

Over four years through 2015, the league’s bid would more than $1.2 billion, which will be $37.5 million per team overall. To first-rounders, the league’s offer would sluggish the growth rate of guaranteed payments, which the documents show augmented by 233 percent from 2000 to 2010.

Like the NBA, the NFL does not put forward a rookie wage scale, although there would be penalties if they are not signed and in training camp in time. The picks could bargain deals.

Picks in the remaining rounds would not be influenced by the rest of the proposal for first-round picks and would receive four-year deals.

Brees Embraces Lead Role for Players – NFL

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints quarterback, to endorse a forthcoming charity golf tournament, appeared in San Diego. The most appealing part of the promotion was Brees, who had to face too many questions, although not many questions were about golf. The questions were about the lawsuit that was recently filed to block the league’s lockout.

On March 11, the league and players were unsuccessful to create a new collective bargaining agreement. The antitrust suit and injunction demand in federal court was filed on that same day by Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and six other current NFL players, and the NFL owners locked out the players, putting the 2011 season in trouble.

Brees said at a news conference that the fight was brought to them and it was the correct thing to put his name on an antitrust lawsuit against the league. He added that he appreciates the sacrifices that players had made before him and it is his conscientiousness to represent veteran players, retired players, former players and not just current players but for the future players and the future of this league.

From 2001 until 2005, Brees played with the San Diego Chargers. He was then permitted to leave as a free agent. In February 2010, he led the Saints to a Super Bowl victory. The performance of Brees was quite remarkable in the 2010 Super Bowl victory. The Saints were in top-notch form in 2010.

For a scheduled hearing on the players’ demand for a preliminary injunction to block the lockout, Brees does not plan to be in court on April 6.

NFL Players Took Their Talking Points to Capitol Hill

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

More than a dozen former and current NFL players took their talking points to Capitol Hill donned in pinstripe suits, where they told lawmakers their side of an increasingly acrimonious labor dispute, with a potential lockout just weeks away. To press their argument against a lockout, Jeff Saturday swapped his uniform, shoulder pads for a coat, and tie.

In a series of high-profile jabs by the players, the league and the owners, the meeting with Congress was the latest. With the Super Bowl less than three weeks away, the collective bargaining agreement expires on March 3. Football remains in the spotlight, while both sides are spending more time pleading their cases in public.

To meet with more than 30 lawmakers, including Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio), Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Reps. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) and Sens. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), the NFL Players Association, the players’ union, brought about 15 current and retired NFL players.

Saturday said that from an ownership standpoint, he believes that they just want to head to a lockout. He thinks that is not a solution and they can get a solution done before going to a lockout. He added that because of these issues, the fans would be the ones who will be affected more than anybody.

On NFL cities, the athletes warned of dire economic impacts should players and team owners fail to agree on a new contract by a March 3 deadline. After the deadline, 2011 season put in jeopardy, as a lockout would likely be imposed.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive lineman Davin Josep said that it is not just the players and the owners, it is important that people need to understand that communities of player’s and owner’s will be affected.

As per a report, for lawmakers to put pressure on owners through its oversight of NFL’s antitrust exemption, the players did not make any explicit requests.

New York Jets NFL Playoff, Super Bowl history

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

The New York Jets have recently qualified for the playoffs for the 14th time in the history of their franchise. While the franchise has been in existence since the year 1960, the majority of the team’s playoff appearances have been in the last two decades.

The Jets play the Indianapolis Colts Saturday and are favorites in NFL Betting.

The Jets have qualified for the playoffs 6 times since the beginning of the 21st century and have become one of the best teams in the NFL on the a regular basis. While they have really turned things around as of late, they have not been able to have the type of success in the playoffs that they’d hope for.

It has been more than 40 years since the Jets last made their way to the Super Bowl. That Super Bowl appearance actually came in the times of the AFL. The Jets managed to win the AFL and thus qualified for the Super Bowl against the winners of the NFL Championship.

The Jets were led to Super Bowl III by the famous Joe Namath. The team managed to win the Super Bowl behind Namath in what is one of the classic football games of all time.

After that time the fans of the Jets had little to cheer for. They did not make the playoffs at all in the 1970s, but did manage to turn things around in the 1980’s. The Jets qualified for the playoffs 4 times in the 1980s and left a foundation for the team to build up to what it is today.

Atlanta Falcons Will Take On New Orleans Saints

Monday, December 27th, 2010

On Monday Night Football action the Atlanta Falcons will clash with the New Orleans Saints.

The Saints need a win in this game to get more momentum entering the playoffs as they lost last week in opposition to the Ravens. On the season the Falcons are now 12-2. All through the playoffs, a win in this game would likely give them home field benefit. On the season the Saints are 10-4.

The over/under for the game is set at 48.5 and in this game the Falcons will be the three point favorites in football betting odds.

The Falcons look like a team that will continue to roll into the playoffs as they are on fire at this moment. They have not lost a game on the road all season as they have now won 8 games in a row overall. As they have outscored their opponents by 108 points on the season, they have been dominant in every sense of the word.

It will be the Saints, who can go into Atlanta on the road and take the victory. On the road they have won 14 of their last 17 games. On the road their success largely is attributed to the play of Drew Brees. In order to puts his team in a position to win each week, Brees doesn’t make many mistakes.

In this game the Falcons will need to try to eliminate the running game all together for the Saints. Brees may not be able to carry the whole team by himself even as he is a top flight quarterback. Brees will be forced to carry the squad on his own if the Falcons can shut down the running game.

Weekend Clash Between The Arizona Cardinals Vs. Dallas Cowboys

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

This weekend the Arizona Cardinals will battle against the Dallas Cowboys. Even as the Cowboys appear to have started to turn things around as of late, the Cardinals are coming off of a loss. Last week, the Cowboys hung on to beat the Redskins. While the Cardinals are sitting at 4-10, the Cowboys are now 5-9 on the season.

In NFL Lines, the Cowboys will be 6-point favorites.

The Cardinals will require figuring out a way to get something going against the Cowboys as they have a truly pale offense. Most teams do find a way to score points against the Cowboys, which is the good news. This season they have allowed more than 28 points for each game.

In opposition to this Arizona Cardinals team the Cowboys will likely put up a lot of points on the board as they have a solid offense. Against the run or against the pass, they aren’t particularly strong. In their last 9 games this poor defense has added to the 8 losses that they have suffered.

Without a quarterback to hold their team, the Cardinals have continued to slide further and further. In order to turn things around and finish off the season strong, the quarterbacks on their team will have a great opportunity. They will have an outside chance of keeping their job with a sturdy finish.

You can expect the Cowboys to run away with this one without any problems if the Cardinals don’t get superb play from their quarterbacks.
